CROWN POINT | Thirty members of the Crown Point High School Latin Club traveled to Indiana University last month to compete at the Indiana Junior Classical League State Convention.

The state competition consists of club, team, and individual events. Individual events include Academic Tests, Graphic Arts, and Creative Arts.  Individually, the Crown Point students did very well, bringing home an entire box of certificates numbering more than 400.

The Crown Point Latin Club was named overall state champion based on all of the individual, team, delegation, and club placings.  "We ended up with over 3,000 points, doubling the score of the second place team," said Jeremy Walker, Latin instructor and club sponsor, in a written news release.

Additionally, four Hub City students, Joey Fallon, Gretchen Hensley, Angela Langlie-Lesnik and Wesley Wood, received Individual Academic Achievement Trophies. Also, Joshua Glass and Hannah Katz received Individual Achievement Trophies in Graphic Arts and Gretchen Hensley and Angela Langlie-Lesnik received Individual Achievement Trophies in Creative Arts

Crown Point advanced its certamen teams in all three levels to the final rounds, the only school to do so.  In final competition, the advanced (third- and fourth- year students) team finished second, while the novice (first year) and intermediate (second year) teams returned home as state champions.

These state champions earned automatic spots on the state teams competing at the national convention this summer.  Crown Point's novice team members are Aaron Hensley, Hannah Katz, Alex Kleeman, Brittany Krowiarz and Eric Landers.  Intermediate team members are Seth Davis, Josh Glass, James Haworth, Stephanie Krause, Angela Roberts and Ali VanCleef.

Crown Point also boasted two outgoing state officers at the convention - Stephanie Krause as state historian and Kevin Jacobs as state webmaster.

At this year's convention, Wesley Wood of Crown Point was elected 1st vice president, while Krause was chosen to continue on the board as the 2008-09 recording secretary.

As a club, the Crown Point students also did well.  The team placed second in the Helen Wampler Spirit Competition, based on all of the club activities throughout the year.  The Crown Point club also placed third with its scrapbook and, for the second year in a row, brought home the first-place trophy in the publicity contest.

"Indiana is a highly competitive state in publicity, often taking several of the top ten spots in national competition, so we were very excited to win this contest," said Walker. "We thank all the local media who helped us win this award."

The next level of competition for the young people is the National Junior Classical League Convention, held during the last week of July at Miami University in Oxford, Ohio.
