VALPARAISO | At least 6,000 extra Democratic ballots were printed today in Porter County by the Voters Registration office.

Patrick Lyp, the Republican representative to the Voter Registration Board, said the office started receiving calls between noon and 1 p.m. that precincts were running short of ballots.

Voters from across the county called The Times to report delays at the polls and that polls had run out of Democratic ballots.

The county has a special machine to print extra ballots as needed, which were then delivered to the polling places throughout the county.

The county had originally ordered ballots in February before officials realized how many people would be voting in the primary election.

Lyp said, however, that the office ran out of the correct size paper and had to use a different size for about 100 ballots, which cannot be read by the county's machines. Those ballots will have to be counted by hand on Wednesday.

"While not a final count tonight, it will be exceedingly close," Lyp said.

They do have a department for such . "

" Porter County is a Republican county - everyone knows this. They are trying to skew the results to ensure a McCain victory in Nov. I bet Obama takes Porter County only because they know he can't beat McCain. Why isn't this voter fraud? "

" I can't stand Obama or Hillary. But I'll tell you what, I can't stand McCain just as much. If these crossover voters think McCain stands a chance against either of the Dem's in November, they're in for a rude awakening. We can only pray for a miracle at the republican convention to give Ron Paul the nomination. "

" You have to remember that a lot of Republicans are crossing over just for the primary -- I wouldn't judge Porter County as a Democratic stronghold just yet -- wait for November! "

" Porter county is a joke at best. I had to vote with a provisional ballot because they did not have me as a registered voter in their books. I found that funny because I voted in 96' 00' and 04'. They even called someone in charge and they said they checked their records and it shows that I never voted EVER. Hmmm sounds fishy to me.

They ran out of democratic ballots right after I showed up. A police officer delivered more ballots but the machine wouldn't accept them.

" At a time when all of the country's eyes are on Indiana, what a shame that Porter County has to bring a stain to the process by not being prepared. Officials may have not predicted this turnout in Feb. when the ballots were printed, but surely between now and then this could have been prevented. "
