INDIANAPOLIS | Democratic gubernatorial nominee Jill Long Thompson on Wednesday named Gary Mayor Rudy Clay and Hammond Mayor Thomas McDermott Jr. to a new advisory panel.

The region leaders are among a dozen Democrats designated co-chairs of the Mayors for Jill Committee. Long Thompson, a former congresswoman seeking to unseat Republican Gov. Mitch Daniels, said the mayors will help her campaign with fundraising, policy development and voter outreach.

"I am honored to have the support of these outstanding public servants," Long Thompson said in a statement. "Together we will work to rebuild our economy and bring prosperity and opportunity to all citizens and communities throughout Indiana."

Both Clay and McDermott supported Indianapolis architect Jim Schellinger in the May gubernatorial primary. Long Thompson scored a narrow victory over Schellinger by amassing a 10,000-vote advantage in Lake County.

Clay as advisers? Guess she doesn't want to be gov. She has to be kidding. "

" I wouldn't let McDermott advise my son's little league team. You see all the good his endorsement for Hillary did. "

Maybe if you had McD backing you, you might have had a chance in any number of those races you ran. "

" Why does this sound like a bad idea to me? It is almost as if she's saying, "Don't vote for me, I'm totally O.K. with another 4 years of Mitch Daniels." Scary. "

Advice for Jill wrote on Jul 23, 2008 3:36 PM:

" If you have McDermott backing you better not plan a victory party. His support ensures your defeat. Look at who he has supported in past elections, not a winner in the bunch. I guess we'll have four more years of Mitch. "
